It‘s Quebec waste reduction week! Do your part!

Every year in Quebec, an impressive quantity of waste is produced.

Preserving the environment and sustainable development are taking root in simple day-to-day actions, whether they are taken at work, home or in public places.

In the context of Quebec waste reduction week (www.sqrd.com) from October 17 to 25, a broad range of tricks and tips have been made available to you to improve how you manage residual waste, both around the house and at work. Here are a few good ones!

Adopt a no-waste lunch

no-waste lunch - waste reductionEvery day, it is possible to make logical choices, particularly in terms of our lunch boxes.

It is possible to opt for meals without needless waste, meaning without waste that cannot be reused, composted or recycled.

Here are a few possible solutions:

  • Assess your food needs to avoid needless food waste.
  • Buy ingredients in bulk that you can put in reusable containers. You will also avoid excess packaging.
  • Avoid disposable utensils and items and opt instead for reusable options (containers, utensils, lunch bag, etc.).
  • Fruits and vegetables are excellent options, particularly because they are compostable, but also because they require little packaging to transport.
  • As much as possible, recycle disposable containers such as water bottles (better yet, try a reusable bottle), juice containers, etc.

At work and at home, reduce and reuse

Here are some tips about reducing paper use in your daily life:

  • At work, use less paper by sending documents and messages via email rather than paper.
  • Do your part by participating in salvage programs. For more information, go to our Collection info section.
  • Select two-sided printing for your documents, which will cut your paper use in half.
  • Why not reuse sheets with printing on one side for arts and crafts or drawing on the other side? You’ll no doubt make some young people very happy.

Recycle your electronics

At the end of their useful life, electronics can and must be sent to an official dropoff site where they can be recycled and reused. By doing so, you can give them a second life and help waste reduction!

Logo-point-depot-ARPE-QuebecSince spring 2015, the St-Thomas and MRC de Joliette ecocentres have become official drop-off points for the Electronic Products Recycling Association – Quebec (EPRA-Quebec). The list of accepted materials includes computers, computer and video game console peripherals, printers, scanners, fax machines, photocopiers, monitors and televisions, telephones, audio/video systems and more.

For the full list of accepted products, go to www.epra.ca.

How can I do my part? Waste reduction

The 4 Rs principle is the base for all responsible management of residual materials. It can be applied at all times and remains simple and effective.

  • Reduce at the source
  • Reuse
  • Recycle
  • Recover
