How can you make the most of your compost?

In your garden or flowerbeds

To aerate the soil, apply between 1 and 5 cm (0.5 to 2 inches) of compost depending on the quality of the soil and plants’ needs. Then mix compost into the top 10 cm (4 inches) of the soil. To avoid burning plants and seeds, avoid seeding or planting directly in the compost.

In planters

To rejuvenate the soil around outdoor planters, add 2.5 cm (1 inch) of compost to the surface soil. To enrich the soil for indoor plants, mix one third sand and one third compost in when repotting.

Around perennials

To control weeds and retain moisture, apply 2.5 cm (1 inch) of compost around perennials.

On your lawn

To reinvigorate your lawn, spread a fine layer of compost with grass seeds. When maintaining your lawn, make sure the soil is aerated and spread a layer of compost no thicker than the grass is tall.
