Tips and advice

Accepted bags

  • Ideally no bags: Place the materials directly in the brown bin
  • Paper bags: All types of paper bags are compostable and accepted
  • Bags with the “compostable” logo

To minimize odours

  • Avoid placing the bin in sunlight.
  • Wrap meat and kitchen wastes in a paper bag or newspaper.
  • Cover kitchen wastes (humid) with dry materials (dead leaves, newspaper, etc.).
  • Mow your lawn one or two days before collection or let the grass dry before placing it in the bin. Leaving the cut grass on the ground is an even better option since it is a natural fertilizer.
  • Rinse the bin with water and mild soap or a solution of water and vinegar.
  • Sprinkle some baking soda in your brown bin.

Freezing problems in winter

Here are some tips to prevent materials from sticking to the bin as a result of freezing:

  • Place a piece of cardboard or newspaper at the bottom of the bin.
  • Avoid placing liquids in the brown bin.
  • If the problem persists, put garden wastes and other compostable materials in a large paper bag and place the bag inside the bin.
